Population health

Our research ranges from the health of the poorest of the poor to diseases of affluence. We advance understanding and improve public health practice and health care in Australia and globally.

Across our five research centres we cover many themes, including:

  • ageing well and ageing productively
  • chronic and infectious disease epidemiology
  • cognitive decline and dementia
  • communicable disease surveillance and outbreak investigation
  • consumer perspectives and attitudes
  • economic analyses
  • e-health and self help interventions
  • environment, climate and health
  • global population health
  • health equity
  • health financing
  • health system performance analysis
  • Indigenous health
  • lifecourse perspectives of health
  • mental health
  • methods for population health research
  • primary health care
  • society, culture and health
  • translational and policy relevant research.

We employ a wide range of disciplines from biostatistics to sociology, epidemiology to economics, psychology to demography, to combine insights in various creative ways. We work closely with consumers, community groups, health care and other professionals (including community service workers, police and lawyers) and policy makers. The quality of research helped us to receive a rating of five in the Excellence in Research for Australia assessment, the only Australian university awarded this top rating.
